Reporting Student Absences
Classical education is highly interactive and requires consistent and punctual attendance. Because the classical approach relies heavily on classroom discussion among students and teachers, most work done in class cannot be made up if a student is absent. For this reason, parents should exercise prudence and make every reasonable effort to ensure student do not miss class, including restricting trips to the allotted breaks.
Absences
Parents must notify the front office of an absence by 8 a.m. to be excused. Call 839-293-6550 and select option 2 for the attendance voicemail.
- Notify the school every day a child is absent.
- Office staff will place calls daily for unaccounted absences.
- If a student has more than three consecutive unexcused absences or a total of five unexcused absences in any year, the student may be classified as truant according to South Carolina statute. Please refer to the Family Handbook, Policy SE-1.0 Attendance, for a list of excused absences.
- In the Grammar School (K-6), missing two hours equals one half-day absence and missing four hours equals one full-day absence. In the Upper School (7-12), absences are calculated by course.
Tardy and Early Release
- Students not at their desk by 7:40 a.m. will be considered tardy.
- Students released prior to 3:00 p.m. will be considered an early release.
- Three tardies or early releases equal one absence.
Please refer to Policies SE-1.0 Attendance, SE-2.0 Tardy/Early Release, and SE-3.0 Releasing a Student from School in the Family Handbook.
